Exchanges among political parties can help promote well-being of people

-

In his keynote speech at the Communist Party of China and World Political Parties Summit on Tuesday, CPC Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping appealed to all political parties around the world to fulfill their responsibilities to promote people’s well-being.

More than 500 leaders and 10,000 representatives of political parties and organizations from over 160 countries participated in the virtual event, whose theme was “For the people’s well-being: the responsibility of political parties”.

The participants’ warm response to Xi’s speech shows their shared desire to draw on the successful experience of the CPC and take advantage of the meeting as a platform to strengthen their exchanges.

As Xi said, when the CPC marked its 100th anniversary on July 1, an important reason why the Party has been able to keep its youthful vigor, and enjoy the full support of the people is the Party’s unselfishness and its wholehearted commitment to serve the fundamental interests of the people. That explains why the Party has always been willing to work with other forces striving for that purpose and why it has had the courage when necessary to conduct painful self-adjustments.

And the Party’s confidence in the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics stems from the tremendous development achievements the nation has made by adhering to that path, despite the heavy price it has had to pay at times.

Always bearing the fundamental interests of the people and the actual conditions of the country in mind, the CPC has neither blindly copied other countries, nor been fettered by the old conventions of Chinese traditional governance and development models. Instead, it has drawn strength and inspiration from both.

Always sticking to its tenet of seeking truth from facts and testing the truth through practice, the Party has developed a down-to-earth work style so that it can transform its people-centered governance philosophy into tangible benefits for the people in this country and beyond.

Which is also why it holds to the line of upholding multilateralism, economic globalization and the United Nations-centered international order.

That is in a stark contrast with some other political parties, particularly those in the developed countries that only serve the wealthy, and whose power-for-power’s-sake governance practice has been unmasked in their ineffectual responses to the rising uncertainties facing the world today.

The times we live in mean that political parties of whatever persuasion cannot shirk their fundamental responsibilities to ensure and enhance the public’s well-being in the course of development and promote harmony between humanity and nature.
