Top graft fugi­tive sen­tenced to jail

Yang Xi­uzhu, one of China’s most-wanted graft fugi­tives, who had been on the run for 13 years, was sen­tenced to eight years in jail for cor­rup­tion and tak­ing bribes by a court in Hangzhou, Zhe­jiang prov­ince, on Fri­day. The court also or­dered the re­cov­ery of her il­licit gains of nearly 26.4 mil­lion yuan ($4.01 mil­lion) and fined her 800,000 yuan. Yang, 70, was for­mer deputy di­rec­tor of the con­struc­tion de­part­ment of Zhe­jiang prov­ince when she fled to the US in 2003.
