Rare ducks appear in Beihai Park
A pair of rare Baikal Teal ducks have been spotted in Beijing’s Beihai Park, drawing many bird lovers to watch and take photos. The bird, also called the squawk duck, is a dabbling duck that breeds in eastern Russia and winters in East Asia. The male duck has a striking green nape, and yellow and black ears, neck and throat. It was listed as an endangered species in 2012 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In March, the birds fly from southern China to Siberia, and return in the fall. It is rare to see them in Beijing in January.
