CAMBODIA CALLING
When French naturalist and explorer Henri Mouhot came upon the jungle-clad ruins of Angkor Wat in the mid-19th century, he excitedly wrote that it was “grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome.” Fast-forward a century and a half, and the Anantara Angkor Resort ( angkor.anantara
.com) in neighboring Siem Reap has recreated that exhilarating sense of discovery in two brand-new presidential suites. Draped in Thai silk and fabrics, both accommodations have a lounge and bar area, a private spa room with a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a plunge pool in an enclosed garden. The two-bedroom Henri Mouhot suite features an Angkor-inspired sandstone relief, while the one-bedroom Anantara Explorer suite takes its design cues from Jim Thompson, the former architect and onetime spy who helped revive the Thai silk industry in the 1950s and ’60s.
