I can’t recommend the Padang-style lunch at Medan Baru enough; located in the Pasar Baru area of Central Jakarta, the no-frills restaurant serves the world’s best fish-head curry and burung puyuh goreng (fried quail). The nearby Metro Atom Plaza is worth a stop to hunt for vintage outfits. For heavenly gelatos, I go to Gelato Secrets ( gelatosecrets.com) on Jalan Teuku Cik Ditiro—my favorite flavor is Vanilla Bamboo Charcoal. The outlet is part of Shophaus Menteng ( shophaus .id), a lifestyle complex that also houses Namelaka (for French and mod-Asian desserts) and Pigeonhole Coffee. The Menteng neighborhood is also where you’ll find Kaum ( kaum.com), one of the best new restaurants in town. From the outside it looks like any other vintage house in the area, but the interiors are partly Indonesian contemporary and partly a throwback to the 1960s. Designer and founder of Jakarta Vintage
