NEARLY TWO DECADES ago, a new millennium dawned. And with it came the beginning of a revolutionary new watchmaking brand: Richard Mille, based in the Swiss village of Les Breuleux.
Richard Mille’s vision for his eponymous brand was simple: apply the same innovative techniques used in the highperformance industries of F1 racing and aeronautics to watches. This meant using highly functional materials favoured by these industries, such as titanium, graphene and carbon fibre; as well as employing a high degree of artistry and architectural nous. The brand set out to create incredibly advanced timepieces, without sacrificing style and sophistication, to herald a new dawn in fine watchmaking and horological heritage.
This vision was encapsulated in the release of the groundbreaking
RM 001, which debuted in 2001. It was revolutionary – not least because of its high price tag for a watch using an 18th century tourbillon. Only 17 were produced, and they sold out instantly.
Over the 16 years since the release of the RM 001, Richard Mille has compounded this reputation for high-performance watches. The release of the RM 002 added a torque indicator; the RM 003 a second time zone; and the RM 004 a split-seconds chronograph – the first in a long line of high-performance chronographs. It was to set the benchmark for Richard Mille’s sporty, ergonomic reputation.
High-profile partners across a range of sporting disciplines followed: tennis ace Rafael Nadal, F1 drivers Jenson Button and Felipe Massa and Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, among others.
And like the constant innovation in F1, aeronautics and other high-performance sporting industries, Richard Mille continues to innovate with its latest models. Here we introduce three of the most eye-catching.

The McLaren-Honda F1 team and Richard Mille share many strands of brand DNA, the constant need to innovate high among them.
The pair has collaborated on the RM 50-03 McLaren F1, a super-light tourbillon split-seconds chronograph. This new Richard Mille calibre is designed for highpowered mechanical performance.
The timepiece, including the strap, weighs less than 40 grams – the lightest mechanical chronograph ever produced (the movement itself weighs a featherlight seven grams). The groundbreaking timepiece also introduces a new material to the watchmaking world: graphene, used alongside the other highperformance materials, such as titanium and Carbon TPT, commonly found in Richard Mille watches. Graphene’s intriguing properties (six times lighter than steel but 200 times stronger) have led F1 teams like McLaren-Honda to consider how to integrate the material into their racing cars.
These aerodynamic materials are wrapped into a timepiece that not only materially resembles an F1 car – aesthetically, the similarities continue. The hollowedout pushers of the chronograph are designed to look like the air intake ducts on the McLaren-Honda car, while the shape of the crown resembles the wheel used by the British racing team.
Only 75 pieces will be made, and each watch will come with a scale model of the McLaren-Honda racing car driven this year by two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne.

Majorcan tennis star Rafael Nadal has been a longtime friend of Richard Mille – and earlier this year he introduced the brand’s newest technical watch, the RM 27-03 Rafael Nadal.
Aesthetically, the timepiece echoes the 10-time French Open winner’s colourful character – and the clay courts he prefers to play on. The striking red and yellow hues of the case evoke Nadal’s native Spain, while satin-brushed surfaces and a polished finish make the RM 27-03 a highly stylised timepiece. Adding to the Iberian aesthetic is the forward-facing head of a bull, seen in the curves of the bridges, the wheel and the mechanical winding tourbillon.
This new sporty timepiece doesn’t just look good – it’s also almost indestructible. The watch is water resistant to 50 metres, while its tourbillon calibre can withstand extreme shocks of up to 10,000 g-forces (although not a fourth-round Wimbledon defeat). The RM 27-03 is limited to only 50 pieces.

The RM 67-02 models, sportier upgrades of the existing RM 67-01 timepieces, this year have two high-class athletes as brand partners: South African sprinter Wayde van Niekerk and Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim. These are highly functional sports watches that sit close to the wrist like a second skin.
Richard Mille’s association with Van Niekerk is already well established.The young sprinter wore the RM 27-02 timepiece when he won gold in the 400 metres at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro – smashing the world record at the same time.
His legacy is immortalised in the RM 67-02 Sprint, a slim, ultra-light, athletic timepiece that’s not out of place on the wrists of high-level athletes – on and off the field. The case is highly shock resistant, while the taut lines of the rotor, in Carbon TPT and white gold, the bridges and the baseplate of this incredibly slim calibre add to its sporty look. An ergonomic, non-slip ‘comfort’ strap means it fits seamlessly on the wrist.
The 67-02 Sprint is joined by the RM 67-02 High Jump, with Olympic medallist Mutaz Essa Barshim the face – and inspiration – for the high-functioning watch.
Both versions have colourful details tailored to the athletes’ home countries. For Van Niekerk’s Sprint, the case is impregnated with yellow and green coloured resins, to denote his native South Africa; while the High Jump is a rich crimson for Mutaz’s home state of Qatar.
