It’s hard to believe that a city of just several million people produced one of the world’s most vibrant film industries. Hong Kong cinema’s golden age of the 1990s has long passed, but this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards nominees for Best Film prove that the industry today is still high-quality and innovative.

Leading the way this year with 11 nominations is Our Time Will Come (1), Ann Hui’s war drama about life in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation. The film may earn Hui her sixth Best Director HKFA, which would be more than any director has received in the award’s history.

Trailing close behind with nine nominations each are Love Education (2)

– actor and director Sylvia Chang’s touching family drama – and Paradox (3),

a Thailand-set action thriller that’s also a thematic continuation of the hit SPL

franchise. Playing a desperate father searching for his kidnapped daughter in Paradox, the prolific Louis Koo might finally win his first Best Actor award.

A tense thriller about an explosives expert caught in an unprecedented hostage situation, Herman Yau’s Shock Wave (4) has seven nominations, including a Best Visual Effects nomination for the team that helped to create the amazing life-size replica of Hong Kong’s CrossHarbour Tunnel for the film.

Proving that the crime genre is still alive and well in Hong Kong, Chasing the Dragon (5) completes the Best Film category. Starring Donnie Yen as a notorious drug lord in 1970s Hong Kong, the true-crime epic is also nominated for a slew of technical awards.

Outside the Best Film category, there’s The Empty Hands (6), the second directorial effort by comedic actor Chapman To, nominated for Best New Director. The offbeat – and surprisingly serious – martial arts drama follows the daughter of a karate instructor (Stephy Tang) who picks up the sport again when life knocks her down. Read our interview with first-time Best Actress nominee Tang on page 80.

There’s also Feng Xiaogang’s Youth (7).

Nominated for Best Film from Mainland and Taiwan, it’s a stirring and gorgeously filmed epic about a group of young performers in a military dance troupe during the Cultural Revolution.

We’re also looking back at classic HKFA winners and nominees in the Made in HK section. We have Wong Kar-wai’s iconic arthouse drama Days of Being Wild (8) – featuring an unforgettable performance by Leslie Cheung – Stephen Chow’s A Chinese Odyssey (9) series and many more. Look for the HKFA statue logo in the movie listings and on the interactive menu.
