Giant tomb on doorstep sees family feud laid to rest

-

A Chongqing man saw the construction of a giant tomb outside his door as part of a long- standing family feud over the relocation of a grave.

Photos show the imposing 2- meter- tall structure being built right near the front door of the Yangliu village homeowner, surnamed Chen.

News of the incident unearthed a decade- long dispute between Chen and the family of another local man, surnamed Li, media reported Sunday.

Thirty years earlier, Li’s parents were buried on the site that is now wedged between Chen’s home and a major village thoroughfare.

The large arched memorial is marked with inscriptions in black, photos show.

“The tomb was never this big. It was only a funeral mound at the time,” said Yangliu village committee official Liu Yiwu.

Despite having knowledge of the grave, Chen began construction of his 4- storey home a decade ago, explained Liu.

Over the years, tensions mounted between the two families, particularly regarding a cash settlement for the relocation of the grave, Chongqing Business News reported.

A recent confrontation led Li to lay down the cash for the construction of the giant tomb on the site.

“We had learned of the situation not long before and put a stop to the project,” said Liu.

With the help of village officials, the families have since buried the hatchet and will move the tomb according to local customs.

The fate of the unfinished mausoleum was not mentioned.
