Huidong police seek 108 drug fugitives

-

Police in Huidong, South China’s Guangdong Province, are seeking 108 fugitives wanted for drug offenses during a campaign, the provincial drug control office said Tuesday.

Huidong public security bureau has offered a 10,000 yuan ($ 1,456) reward for the capture of information on the 108 runaway drug suspects, part of the efforts that began in January to rid society of harmful narcotics.

Of the 108 listed, only one is a woman, aged 36, and the rest are men aged from 21 to 52.

Ketamine produced in Huidong has a reputation for having no equal, even though other drug producers use the same raw materials and equipment, Southern Weekly reported in January.

The formula for ketamine in the region is only passed on through male members of extended families, news portal thepaper. cn reported Wednesday. Thirty- one of the fugitives come from the township of Baihua, home of a notorious drug trafficker.

He Moufeng, dubbed “the founder of ketamine in Huidong,” had 10 drug technicians working for him. It is said that buyers had no need to test their ketamine due to its high quality, news portal ycwb. com reported in June 2015.

He and 62 members of his gang were detained in 2013, and He was later sentenced to death, according to a Sina Weibo post from his lawyer Huang Chengchang. The case is currently undergoing the appeal process, Huang posted.

The report said that 20 percent of the ketamine authorities in China seized between 2010 and 2012 was produced in Huidong. The annual production of ketamine in Huidong is as much as 60 tons, it said, without giving specific data.

Police in Guangdong face severe challenges in tackling drug crimes as every prefecture- level city in the province has drug production bases and in some rural towns, many extended families engage in drug production and trafficking, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
