Woman injects mercury into ex’s leg

-

A jilted woman who tried to poison her boyfriend by injecting him with pure mercury over a breakup was sentenced to six years by a court in Wuhan, Hubei Province on Wednesday.

The 35- year- old woman, referred to as “Qiqi” in reports, was found guilty of intentional injury after she laced her boyfriend’s coffee with sleeping pills and then injected a syringe of the toxic element into his leg as he slept.

Qiqi planned the poisoning in late February 2016 after the victim, surnamed Chen, threatened to break off their four- year relationship and move away, the Hongshan District People’s Court found.

The case came to light after Qiqi sent an anonymous text to Chen’s father on March 4, informing him his son was in the hospital.

Suspicious, Chen’s family contacted Wuhan police.

Officers found that Qiqi had collected the mercury from nearly 90 thermometers.

The court also ordered Qiqi to pay Chen more than 770,000 yuan ($ 128,333) in medical expenses and lost wages.
