As Arsenal’s woes deepen, Wenger must decide on his future soon oon

- HILTON YIP

All good things must come to an end, but not for Arsene Wenger and his tenure at Arsenal, it seems. This season has gradually unraveled as the team have gone from one embarrassment to another, but the loss at West Brom on Saturday was a new low.

As the game began, planes flew banners with contrasting messages, one urging Wenger to resign while the other asked him to stay. But among the fans, the feelings are not so conflicted. There may be some die- hard Wenger loyalists, but more and more supporters are leaning toward “Wenger out.”

After the loss to West Brom, Wenger said he would reveal his decision about his future “very soon,” thus prolong- ing the suspense of what has been an agonizing horror show for many fans. Which is not likely to end soon given new reports that Wenger is determined to stay on.

The Baggies may be a top- half team this season, but there was no excuse for Arsenal giving up two goals in amateurish fashion from corners to the same guy. The Gunners were abject, giving up the first goal in the 12th minute and playing passively, despite Alexis Sanchez’ equalizer. At one point late in the second half, West Brom even did an imitation of Barcelona by passing rings around Arsenal to the home crowd’s pleasure.

While Sanchez did his part with his goal, he picked up an injury from a tackle and had to come off in the second half. Without him, Arsenal were toothless and did not look to come back at all. With the loss and Manchester United’s win on Sunday, the Gunners have fallen to sixth, five points behind fourth- placed Liverpool.

There is no doubt that Wenger deserves a lot of admiration and respect for all his achievements for Arsenal. The majority of true supporters are aware of this, and the insults directed at Wenger by certain so- called fans are shameful. But it is becoming increasingly clear that the team are not responding to him. As their season has nose- dived, the team are looking more unmotivated. In short, they look as if they have already given up. When things have calmed down, someone needs to find out how the team collapsed this season from being second in early December to falling to sixth and getting blasted 10- 2 over two legs by Bayern in the Champions League.

It is hard for this writer to say this, but it has reached this point. Wenger should be able to leave with dignity but he needs to leave soon.
