Aggravating tensions on Korean Peninsula won’t mollify nuclear crisis

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump on Monday discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula over the phone, sending a strong, clear message to the world that all parties concerned should refrain from taking any action that will aggravate tensions on the peninsula.

During the past months, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been escalating and peace- loving people around the world are worried about the aggravation.

On the one hand, just several days ago, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ( DPRK) tested a ballistic missile launch, vowing that a new nuclear test was being prepared and more missile tests would be conducted on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

On the other hand, Washington has made some harsh comments on the issue, igniting worries across the globe that the US may resort to military action against the DPRK.

It is known to all that missile launch and nuclear test by the DPRK contradict the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. The UN Security Council has adopted several resolutions condemning the DPRK’s nuclear test and imposing relevant sanctions. Last week, the UN Security Council expressed opposition to the DPRK’s missile launch and reiterated its stance on resolving problems through dialogue.

Over the years, China’s position on the issue has been firm and clear: China remains committed to denuclearizing the peninsula, maintaining peace and stability there and resolving problems through dialogue and negotiation.

China is seriously concerned about the latest developments in the nuclear and missile programs of the DPRK. China strongly opposes any act that violates the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

The US is a vital party to solving the issue. Therefore, Washington is welcomed to play a positive role in peacefully resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, and China is willing to work with all parties concerned to achieve denuclearization and safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

In sum, all parties concerned should exercise restraint and refrain from any remarks and action that will aggravate tensions on the peninsula. They should seek a peaceful solution to the Korean Peninsula issue which meets the interests of all related parties.
