Chinese version of musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ to tour Beijing and Guangzhou this winter

-

The producers of the Chinese version of the worldwide famous musical Mamma Mia! announced at a press conference in Beijing on Monday that the production will be touring the capital city and South China’s Guangdong Province in November.

The production will play in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, from November 12 to December 2, before moving on to Beijing from December 12 to January 27, 2019.

Further dates are set to be announced at a later date.

Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, the musical is about love and friendship, with bright music and a strong suspenseful plot. Since it was first performed in London in 1999, the musical has enjoyed a high reputation over the past nearly two decades.

The music in the production is based on the hit songs from Swedish pop group ABBA and include popular hits such as “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money” and “Lay All Your Love on Me.”

The Chinese version of Mamma Mia first debuted in China in 2011 and quickly became a hit. The new production will, however, feature an all new cast, which includes well-known Chinese actresses Adia Chan as the lead character Donna and Qiuling as Donna’s friend Rosie.

“I grew up with the songs in Mamma Mia!, they really encouraged me,” Chan told media at the conference.

“I’m sure we will be able to do well.”
