Seedorf, Kluivert take over Cameroon national team

-

Clarence Seedorf has been appointed head coach of the Cameroon national team, with his former Netherlands teammate Patrick Kluivert as his assistant, Cameroonian Minister of Sport Pierre Ismael Bidoung Mkpatt said Saturday.

The two former AC Milan players take over from Belgian Hugo Broos, who left last year after the Indomitable Lions failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia by coming third in their African qualification group.

Alexandre Belinga had been acting as caretaker coach since Broos’ departure.

Seedorf has had little success as a coach, failing to last six months in any of his previous roles with Milan, Chinese League One side Shenzhen and Spain’s Deportivo la Coruna.

The 42-year-old won four Champions League titles as a player, including two with Milan, and made 87 international appearances between 1994 and 2008.

Ex-Barcelona striker Kluivert has plenty of experience as an assistant coach in his home country, including with the Dutch national side with Louis van Gaal at the helm between 2012 and 2014. He also spent a year as the director of football at Paris Saint-Germain.

Cameroon will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in June next year, where they will be the defending champions after lifting their fifth title in Gabon last year.
