Ancient Han tomb found in Luoyang, Henan Province

-

An ancient tomb has been discovered in Luoyang, Central China’s Henan Province, archeologists announced on Monday.

The tomb, according to local archaeologist Pan Fusheng, is “quite unique and complicated,” as the complex consists of two corridors and four chambers.

“We have been working on this excavation since September,” Fu explained.

“Currently, the skeleton of the tomb’s owner has been unearthed as well as many different burial objects that were discovered along with the tomb.”

So far a copper lamp, bronze mirror and earrings have been discovered in the main chamber, while the smaller rooms to the north contained a large amount of painted pottery pots as well as a series of copper relics such as discs and furnaces.

One of the burial objects unearthed along with the tomb contained liquor, which, according to archaeologists, was possibly made during the Western Han Dynasty (206BCAD25).

Shi Jiazhen, one of the experts involved in the excavation, explained to the Henan Daily that this marks the first time either a copper lamp or liquor has been discovered in Luoyang.

“Based on the quantity and quality of these discoveries, these objects can be regarded as high-level relics,” Shi explained.

Many jade burial objects were discovered buried with the tomb’s owner.

According to experts, jade items such as these help date the tomb to 2,000 years ago as they were “typical burial objects” used during that time period.
