Hyundai art exhibition to explore technologies, humanity

-

South Korean carmaker Hyundai on Thursday opened an art exhibition in Beijing that aims to explore the social and cultural dimensions of technological progress and provide a forum for future ideas around mobility, energy and sustainability.

The Future Humanity – Our Shared Planet exhibition will open for free through February 28 at the Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing. Exhibitions will also be launched in Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul and Hyundai Motorstudio Moscow.

Launched by Hyundai, China Central Academy of Fine Arts Visual Art Innovation Institute and Ars Electronica, the exhibition will showcase 17 projects from nine countries.

“The exhibition addresses the future relationships between humans and machines, the interplay of culture and technology, as well as the tension between tradition and spirituality on the one hand, and mechanization and rationalization on the other,” Hyundai said in a statement.

Coming at a time when technological advancement has reached a new era, the exhibition will also explore technologies’ roles in human society of the future as opposed to its role as a mere tool for humans.

The exhibition will provide a place for engineers and designers to present their visions for the future and a stage and a forum for future ideas around mobility, energy and sustainability.

Shaped by three curators from three different countries and cultures, the exhibition will also offer different perspectives and understandings of future technologies and humanity.

The curators are Martin Honzik, senior director at Ars Electronica, Qiu Zhijie, professor at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and curator of the Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2017 and Lee Daehyung, art director of the Hyundai Motor Company and curator of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2017.

“It’s no surprise that the project presentation shows different cultural influences along with something else of essential importance: the entire world is working on the future and progress is powered everywhere by a great variety of human wishes, dreams and visions,” Hyundai said in the statement.
