EMILIE YABUT-RAZON | LIFESTYLE JOURNALIST I have a triangular Balinese chest of drawers in teak wood with mother-of-pearl inlays. I bought it when I first moved to Hong Kong a decade ago, and it’s always had a place in our home. It’s not exactly a space-saver, but the drawers do offer some storage. It’s decorative too – I just love handmade details on furnishings and accessories, as these remind me that I am in possession of something unique.

KATE SPRINGER | FREELANCE WRITER AND EDITOR I can't let go of an old Chinese-style cabinet that I bought on Craigslist my first year in Hong Kong. I don't think it has any real value, but the warm, dark wood chest adds a bit of character and contrast to my otherwise ultra-modern, all-white apartment.

MELISSA TWIGG | FREELANCE JOURNALIST I have spent thousands of dollars I don't have transporting my many paperback novels around the world with me — and stacking them next to my bed, on windowsills and beside the kitchen sink because studio flats aren’t usually known for their libraries. It may sound eccentric but I recommend it. Great books are like old friends, and are hugely comforting companions in a strange city.
