A style conscious couple turns to Millwork Interiors to design their home away from home in Sheung Shui
In Hong Kong, where space is so hard to come by, it’s a true luxury to be able to enjoy weekends in one’s holiday home. An elderly couple purchased their second home in the luxury development, The Valais, in Sheung Shui, with this as their main intention. They hoped their home away from home would allow them to host frequent dinner parties, focus on gardening and enjoy quality sojourns with loved ones. They turned to Millwork Interiors to work its magic on the interiors of the three-storey 2,500sqft house to embrace the natural setting of the surroundings and achieve an elegant, seamless space where their family and friends could relax.
Explains Chiling Leung, the founder and principal designer of the studio, "I wanted to create something that connected with nature, yet felt spacious and cosy at the same time." Noting the

abundance of natural light throughout the abode, Chiling worked this to her advantage to achieve a crisp, ethereal mood of serenity. Entering the spacious house, one is enveloped in the calming yet modish surroundings, where soaring high ceilings and the beauty of light invites you to unwind. Stunning Italian furniture from Ligne Roset in the bedrooms, Flexform, Knoll and Zoom by Mobimex in the living room, statement lighting fixtures by Mooi and Artemide, carefully considered upholstery sourced from Wallpaper Plus and fine finishes beckon to sit down, explore and connect with the space. Even though you are in Hong Kong, the most striking aspect of Chiling’s aesthetic is that she has transported you to another world – her skill of combining architectural precision with gorgeous素，感覺開揚窩心。」
interior design results in a home the couple are delighted with. "It was the greatest joy to be able to surprise them and create something quite different with this project," Chiling confides. "I designed their main residence as well, which was predominantly dark hues with walnut flooring and black and white marble, while this one is very light and bright, so the two projects are a complete contrast."
Chiling credits the success of this project to the homeowners’ great taste – they chose most of the furnishings together – as well as their willingness to experiment and try different things. For example, in the living room where floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead out to the garden, she conceived the idea of making the area more arresting by adding additional translucent glass panels with intricate gold lines. These were installed at a tilted angle to offset the existing perpendicular setting of the windows, which has resulted in a stunning focal point as soon as you enter the residence. The homeowners also entrusted Chiling with custom designing an original shoe cabinet in the entrance, made by weaving leather panels with a timber wood frame. "It was hard work to get this piece exactly right, but the result is worth it," she says.
“THE GOOD THING ABOUT A SMALL SPACE IS YOU DON’T NEED MANY THINGS TO MAKE IT REALLY SPECIAL”
In terms of the colour scheme, the designer kept it fairly neutral throughout, and created interesting impact areas by contrasting accent colours and wallpaper designs. "Both the homeowners and I liked the effect of blue tones combined with yellow, which we feel is refreshing, yet unique," Chiling says, and this pairing is perfectly illustrated in the study – the adjoining area between the bedrooms on the first floor. "I love the blue wallpaper with its graphic lines and the contrast against the gold framed door."
The designer calls the breakfast area her favourite part of the home. Bathed in sunlight, Chiling conceived the space to be all about nature, flowers and light, and chose shapely furniture in pastel hues, wallpaper and upholstery to reflect this. As for the homeowners, the whole house is their little slice of heaven. Whether its tending to their plants and orchids, or having their children here with them to reconnect after a hectic week in the city, its clear that Chiling’s design vision clearly resonates with their lifestyle. //
