CLOCK RENAISSANCE
Functional and Fascinating, the ticking clock is back in Fashion
In our fast-paced, digital age, the concept of time is ever more elusive. The hours speed by as we multitask our way through the day, often glued to mobile phones, computers and television screens. With its gentle, unhurried ticking, the wall clock creates a comforting ambience that gives us cause to pause, slow down and enjoy time. Kieninger has been producing wall, floor and mantel clocks since founder Joseph Kieninger set up his business in 1912. Located in the Black Forest in Germany, Kieninger is the oldest existing manufacturer of mechanical clock movements in the world. Kieninger clocks not only look beautiful – with wooden cases featuring a fine lacquer or hand-rubbed finish, bevelled crystal glass, enamel dials and gold plated decorations – they house high-quality movements and other functions developed and patented by Joseph Kieninger and, later by his son, Wilhelm. Movements feature durable stainless components, while pinions are finished with a special process developed to reduce friction and wear. One industry first was Kieninger’s KSU-16 rod triple chime movement which offered a choice of three melodies – Westminster, Bird Hunter and Ode to Joy – every hour. Another ingenious innovation is the automatic chime shut-off switch, which turns off chimes between 10pm and 7.15am for an uninterrupted sleep. Floor clocks give a focal point to a room. Kieninger offers a variety of styles, from the classic, grandfather in mahogany to ultra-modern pieces in glass with LED lighting. For a contemporary take on the traditional wall clock, there are slim, column-style variants with a shiny piano finish. From petit models in shimmering silver to walnut variants replete with four faces showing different world time zones, mantel clocks make the most artistic timekeepers, and heirlooms. Exquisitely crafted to show off their mesmerising movements, Kieninger clocks bring true joy to the passing of time.
