ENTERTAINING DREAM
A contemporary family home in Melbourne is testament to Australian studio Techn¯e Architecture + Interior Design’s ability to deliver bespoke and authentic design at any scale澳洲設計公司Techn¯e Architecture + Interior Design擅於打造特色優美的設計,這間墨爾本家庭屋就是最佳證明
When it came time to transform their two-storey property, Melbourne-based financiers Shaun Chalmers and Fiona Brown turned to Technē Architecture + Interior Design. They wanted to create an understated, contemporary space that would accommodate their love for entertaining and fulfil their family lifestyle with their young child. What that entailed was a full reconfiguration of the existing floor plan, with new front and rear courtyard spaces as well as new external windows and doors. A staircase with a powder room underneath repurposes the forgotten space, overcoming the common spatial challenges that present themselves in home refurbishments.
Senior interior designer Jonny Mitchell and architect Karina Piper of Technē reveal: "We envisioned a space that would exude a sense of lightness and bring calm to those within. Maximising airflow and maintaining a strong visual connection to the courtyard spaces was central to achieving this."
For the home in the inner-suburb of Richmond, the designers opted for a colour palette of white, black, grey and beige throughout, which is softened by abundant natural light that imbues the space with warmth. They explain: "Richmond still retains many references to its past as a manufacturing hub and this set the tone for our design response." The duo took subtle cues from the area’s industrial heritage to utilise a material-rich palette for the residence – rendered brickwork, matte black finishes and stone capture the urban spirit of the home’s surrounds, while warm timber flooring and joinery, marble and the plush, chunky knitted carpet bring texture and dimension to the living spaces.
By introducing rich textures throughout the interiors, these elements – combined with the homeowners’ fantastic collection of art – play their part in creating a distinct atmosphere amid the pared-back colour palette. The designers have also integrated the indoors and outdoors as
a hub for entertaining – vertical gardens and an abundance of greenery throughout the courtyard spaces create an urban oasis for all seasons. The designers add: "Each courtyard space is bracketed by dramatic double-height industrial doors, drawing the eye through the home and into its refined arenas." An outdoor kitchen rendered in contrasting matte charcoal laminate effectively extends the space available for entertaining, while grey stone carries the monochromatic palette outdoors.
Overall, this home is a clean, calming space that exudes a sense of renewal. Despite its contemporary approach, the designers have integrated elements of surprise in the home. In the entrance, for instance, there is a warm-white glazed brick wall stacked in a random pattern. "This works well in the entry because it doesn’t obstruct any views into the main space when you walk through the front door," remark the designers. "The pattern also allows all that filtered natural light from the front door and
side windows to dissipate into the living room." Another clever feature is the intimate powder room – visually alluring with its Designers Guild wallcoverings complementing the black tapware and accessories. The homeowners wanted this contrast here, as the space was naturally welllit and had a view of the ferns growing by the side of the house, so it seemed like a good opportunity to do something different.
On the collaboration process, the designers reveal that the couple were very easy to work with, as they had similar ideas and aesthetics to the original concept. "We were all on the same page in terms of finishes and working towards a contemporary, simple look and feel," they say. "The functionality of the space, however, was largely driven by them, as we wanted it to respond to their lifestyle and future growth as a family."
Finally, as an ode to the couple’s passion for entertaining, it comes as no surprise that the designers and the homeowners are in agreement on their favourite part of the home. "We like the built-in bar, as it’s the most surprising element in the house," they confide. "It’s integrated among the kitchen joinery, so it appears like a cupboard. When opened, the doors fold away to reveal a softly illuminated collection of glassware and liquor." A pleasant surprise indeed. //
