SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

- EMILY LEUNG, EDITOR

In Hong Kong, as in major cities all over the world, space is a scarce commodity. This, together with the constant sky-rocketing property prices, has led developers to build more and more micro homes to meet the increasing demand of millennials looking to jump on the property ladder – in the past few years, micro homes have proven more popular than any other category of build.

As living spaces are continually growing smaller, this pushes designers and creatives to continually deliver new solutions – the key is combining intelligent designs with transformable solutions and interesting colour palettes to achieve the perfect balance. Our issue this month encapsulates this theme perfectly – from shopping and trend inspiration, to expert tips and advice from interior designers on making the most of small spaces, to our line-up of compact yet beautiful homes. Chic and adaptable abodes in Hong Kong (Pg 98, 106 and 126), an Art Deco-inspired apartment in Antwerp filled with Scandinavian influences (Pg 88), and a stunning family home in Paris (Pg 114) heavy on dramatic contrasts all demonstrate that with a little ingenuity, living in small spaces doesn’t mean making big sacrifices.

In our living section, we whisk you away to the inspiring island of Taketomi in Okinawa, Japan (Pg 141) for an honest, luxurious getaway, while in Good Taste, we uncover the work of three pastry artisans and their spectacular desserts designed to seduce the senses on every level – ideal for celebrating Mother’s Day this month (Pg 146).

Our small homes issue is always the most popular one of the year, so apart from this one in your hands, we will be conceiving another one this November. If you have a fantastic project you are working on or know of any intriguing spaces you think we should cover, please get in touch at hjedit@edipressemedia.com – we’d love to hear from you. Enjoy the issue!
