Let it flow: Consider how different rooms interweave and connect with each other – both visually and physically. Creating occasions for the eye to be invited to reach beyond what is immediately visible extends the illusion of space. Double up: Bring exterior views inside with the use, for example, of similar paint colours. Subtle hues of blue beside the sea, or green near mountain views enhance the relationship with the surroundings and connect interior to exterior, expanding a space. Light the way: How light can penetrate a space is important. The use of semi-glazed or mirror surfaces in select locations, as well as painted walls and contrasting finishes, from matt to glossy, invites light to reflect in different ways, adding to the feeling of space. Fix your furnishings: Combine furniture and architectural elements, for example by building a bookshelf into a partition. This saves space while defining it. Uneven wall setbacks found in some of Hong Kong’s older flats also offer an opportunity to create effective niches and shelves. Tailor it: Bespoke furniture allows you to adapt the size of various elements to the existing space for optimum results. Don’t be shy: Materials, fabrics and colours all help define the character of the space. Minimalism can be an answer, but it is certainly not the only answer.
