NATURAL FORCES
Summer and the outdoors go hand in hand – this month it’s all about soaking up the sun and feeling your spirits lift with the azure blue sky. The kids are all out, so the longer golden days should be spent enjoying a well-deserved break with them and relishing in family bonding. Naturally, we dedicate this issue to celebrating the great outdoors, children and the natural environment where we place design at the forefront.
In Hong Kong where space is such a luxury, an exterior area is the ultimate indulgence. We chat to two landscape experts in Report (Pg 71), who share their expert tips on how to incorporate this at home, and showcase a selection of patio furniture, nature-inspired accessories and planters in Shopping (Pg 49) to get your design juices flowing.
When it comes to inspiring children, we know that play – structured and unstructured – should be at the heart of their everyday lives and experiences. Therefore, play spaces need to be imaginative and well-designed. This is well demonstrated in our Spaces feature of Malvern College Pre-School (Pg 65), which encompasses a visionary open and integrated learning environment. Fun for the kids is taken to greater heights at the renovated Tower Wing for Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, where the themed Family Suites and interior and exterior play zones ensure a memorable vacation for the whole family (Pg 133).
Needless to say, nature in all its glory is enhanced through the myriad of homes featured – from a sprawling refuge for a Buddhist family filled with natural elements on the Peak (Pg 80) to a serene beach villa on South Africa’s West Coast (Pg 94), each abode truly communes with the outdoors. Finally, we showcase the perfect summer meal in Good Taste (Pg 138) – a seafood feast paired with exquisite wines from Rech to really celebrate the season.
