“I love artworks that bring positive vibes and perspectives to the viewer,” enthuses Rachel Lee, the co-founder of Soluna Fine Art, who injected a breath of fresh air into the local art scene when she brought the South Korea-based gallery to a quaint stretch on Sheung Wan’s Sai Street in 2018 for its first international outpost. “We already have so much socio-political turbulence all around the world, art can be an alternative pathway for human beings to seek solutions that can bring peace and joy to all of us.”
A look through the gallery’s curations reveal an artistic predilection for vigour and ebullience, from the recent solo exhibition of Kim YoungHun showcasing eight vibrantly coloured oil paintings inspired by digital screen glitches, to Obangsaek: Vermilion, a group show opening this month from a five-part series exploring works constructed with the five traditional Korean colour schemes. It centres around vermilion, a fiery red representing the energy of life. “Throughout this collection, the works of art embody the essence of the colour vermillion: creation, passion, and love,” says Rachel, who highlights the many blind spots and limitations of human beings that can be overcome through art. “By breaking boundaries and traversing judgements, art can be seen as a thinking tool for us to find solutions during difficult times.”
