The somewhat shudder-inducing portmanteau word athleisure was bandied around following the surge in popularity last year of gym gear too stylish to save for the gym. But how far should this exercise-wearas-leisure-wear trend go? For those concerned that we’re unwittingly okaying women to live from dawn till dusk in their Lululemon lycras, fear not; the S/S16 runways provided some welcome revisions to the trend. The latest take on athleisure is sleeker and more sophisticated. Not a pink mesh panel in sight, this garb is less the sort one actually runs, catches or downwards dogs in, more the desk-, dinner- or disco-ready kit that combines the coolest aspects of streetwear with the attitude and comfort of basketball and track favourites. Well in that case, resume play.
