AMBUSH

-

What began as a jewellery passion project quickly created hype among streetwear loyalists and soon turned into a cult label. Without any formal fashion training, Korean-american designer Yoon Ahn began Ambush in Tokyo with her husband, Japanese rapper Verbal, selling chains and rings. Within a few years, Ambush was being sported by such rap giants as A$AP Rocky and Kanye West, and had caught the eye of the luxury fashion world. Ambush was one of the LVMH Prize finalists in 2013, and this year Kim Jones chose Yoon Ahn to lead Dior Homme’s jewellery line. It was no surprise that fans called on Yoon Ahn to expand into ready-to-wear, a debut that met great success. Her second collection draws inspiration from the area where the designer grew up on the outskirts of Seattle, taking the form of cape-like puffers and harness bags or belts fastened in unconventional ways. Even the pieces drenched in nostaligia have a characteristically youthful spin, whether a classic herringbone coat or a red cowboy hat, proving that while Yooh Ahn may be installed at the helm of a major fashion house, her heart still lies in the rebellious culture of streetwear.
