Residents’ courtyards are just beautiful

- Qin Yichao and Zhang Long

JIADING introduced its Beautiful Courtyard Initiative recently, following its selection as a national model district, to improve the district’s environment and management.

A growing number of Jiading residents are building their own “beautiful backyards.”

Zhu Minghui from Nanxiang Town, after watching a documentary on gardening, said to her husband that maybe they should do something about gardening too because so many neighbors are cultivating their gardens so well.

Nanxiang initiated a series of events and played a documentary on residents’ courtyards and the stories behind them. The documentary inspired many residents to renovate their own courtyards.

Zou Haihua, a resident of the Fanglin community in Nanxiang, has a courtyard with hundreds of plants and now teaches neighbors how to grow and look after their own.

Shen Huijuan, a resident of Junxiang community, built a “clinic courtyard” to treat her neighbors’ dying plants and return them after they’d been revived. Her clinic courtyard also spread knowledge on garbage classification to help improve the environment in her community.

In the villa community on Xincheng Road, the Beautiful Courtyard program has had a positive effect. In the Ailishe community, the neighborhood committee has encouraged its residents to use their courtyards to plant vegetables.

In Du Benxiang’s garden are almost 50 bonsai. Their beauty has inspired many other residents in the community to learn from Du’s experience in caring for bonsai in their own gardens.

In Huating Town, Jiading Industrial Park and Juyuan New Area, pictures of beautiful courtyards taken by local residents have been posted on their official WeChat accounts to encourage more residents to join the initiative.
