Local health center joins up with university
NANXIANG Town Community Health Service Center was inaugurated as an affiliate to Tongji University School of Medicine, becoming the first case nationwide.
In response to residents’ expectations for better diagnosis and treatment, Associate Professor Xie Nanzi with Tongji University School of Medicine started to see patients in the center and teach local student doctors as early as preparatory work was about to begin.
“I always thought I suffered from a lumbar disc herniation for many years before I went to see Dr Xie,” said a woman surnamed Zhang who loves dancing.
After learning more about Zhang’s lifestyle, Xie suspected she might have a compression fracture and this was confirmed at a later examination.
“Professor Xie always asks carefully and doesn’t let go of any detail when she sees a patient,” said Dong Chenjie, a general practitioner at the center.
“She talks to her patients with systemic medical inquiry methods, which provides references for general practitioners in the center and inspires them with new ideas,” said Qiu Yanqing, director of the center.
Next, Tongji University School of Medicine will build a university resource platform for the center to step up development of medical research and pave the way for training of community general practitioners.
Last year, a parallel activity of the 8th Annual Shanghai Symposium and Faculty and Training Session on Sino-US Family Medicine was held at the Nanxiang center by Tongji University School of Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Three US experts showcased standardized clinical procedures and shared with general practitioners their experience.
“Thanks to the cooperation with Tongji University School of Medicine and the universities, we are exposed to more development opportunities and new ideas which help broaden our vision,” said Qiu.
Qiu’s words are confirmed by a number of articles published in core journals.
From last year to June, the center published 11 papers in core journals, while only five papers were published between 2013 and 2016.
The center also participated in a medical project competition held by Tongji University School of Medicine and was named 22nd in scientific research capacity of all China’s community health service institutes.
