Shanghai Art Fair climbs to even greater heights
THE 2018 Shanghai Art Fair kicks off at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center in the Pudong New Area on November 8.
The three-day fair, established in 1997, is now considered one of the largest and oldest events of its kind in Asia. This year, nearly 120 galleries and art institutions from both home and abroad are participating, including 30 local galleries.
About 5,000 artworks ranging from canvas, sculpture, ink-wash paintings, ceramics to video and installation will be on display.
For local art lovers, works created by a cluster of big names in the creative field, such as Picasso, Rambrandt, Rubens and Zao Wouki, can also be found at the fair.
In order to emphasize its special geographic location, this year the fair also set up a section titled “Glorious Asia” featuring nearly 40 galleries from South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan for a collective reflection of the art power in the Asian region.
One of the fair’s highlights is a special project conducted by artist Wang Yiming.
Since 1953, when mankind first landed on the top of Mount Everest, nearly 100,000 people go to the Everest Base Camp every year, leaving a great amount of rubbish there. Based on his personal experience when sketching on the site, Wang invited artists and volunteers from all over the world to create 81 giant abstract canvases to try and persuade people to stop climbing Everest. Some of these works will be shown at the fair.
The 12th Chinese Art Critics Annual Meeting will also come to Shanghai. About 60 top art critics from China will discuss the current situation and future of the nation’s art on November 10 and 11 at the conference hall at the fair.
