TWO 220-kilovolt transformer substations completed in January this year helped deal with power shortages in Songjiang during the summer’s peak demand.

Construction of the Songgong and Huayangqiao substations was part of a city-level project to build 31 such facilities.

Located south of Qianyuan Road and east of Jiaohuan Highway, the Songgong transformer substation occupies an area of 12,801.3 square meters.

Huayangqiao transformer substation, east of Songwei Road N. and north of Shenjiahu Highway, occupies an area of 9,872 square meters.

The east-west transmission line of the two substations runs 59.94 kilometers within the district, crossing two towns and one community. The two transformer substations help raise the power supple capacity of Songjiang by 20 percent.

The transmission line also intersects with many other structures. It is estimated that the line cuts across 15 rivers, 14 roads (including three highways), three railways (including Shanghai-Kunming Expressway), three factories, 10 ponds and 93 other lines. Sixty-nine residential houses, 1.8-kilometer-long 500-kilovolt transmission lines and six steel towers were dismantled.

“Responsible authorities would visit every high-risk construction site during biting cold weather or at pitch-dark night. Till the final segment of transmission line was laid, everybody stayed alert. No accident occurred from the beginning of the project to the end,” said Guan Biping, vice president of Songjiang Power Supply Company.
