Wagas outlet fined over excessive salad bacteria

A WAGAS outlet in Pudong has been fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,080) for violating China’s food safety laws.

Five salads, costing 58 yuan each, at the Zhangyang Road outlet were found to contain excessive bacteria, Pudong’s market regulator said.

Last month, Huangpu District’s market watchdog fined a Wagas outlet on Xizang Road S. 50,000 yuan for selling carrot cakes online without a permit.

It was selling the item via food delivery platform Meituan but didn’t have a permit to sell it online, a violation of online food safety regulations.

In another case, the Gonghexin Road outlet of Isshou Sushi was fined 50,000 yuan by Jing’an regulators for excess bacteria in its pineapple and orange tea.

Meanwhile, the Briant bakery on Maoming Road N. in Jing’an District has been fined 2,000 yuan for changing the crying face posted by food watchdog officials to a smiley face and removing the inspection date.

The city’s food safety scoring system displays results in the form of a smiling, flat or crying face. A smiling face means good food safety while a crying face indicates the opposite. The face has been changed into a crying one again, officials said.

The Zhebei outlet of the Kedi convenience store in Huangpu District was fined 25,000 yuan after two packs of bread it sold lacked production and expiry dates.

And the Quyang outlet of Carrefour in Hongkou District was fined 10,000 yuan for selling expired biscuits.
