- Ma Yue ATHLETICS

THE 2019 Shanghai International Elite 10K Race will be held on October 20, organizers announced yesterday.

The event will feature a total of 7,000 runners — with 6,000 competing in the 10-kilometer main race and the rest 1,000 taking part in the 6km health run.

The route for the races will cover the ecological zone on the north side of the Suzhou Creek in Putuo District. The 10K race will start from the Suzhou Creek sightseeing pier, with the finish line being set at East China Normal University.

Those interested can log on to www.shang-ma.com or use the event’s official smartphone app to register from 10am tomorrow to 5pm on Friday. The quotas will be distributed through a lucky draw and the results will be unveiled on September 16.

A green channel has been opened in the registration system for “elite runners”, who can hand in their applications before 5pm today. Elite runners are those who achieved good results in last year’s race.

According to the organizers, 500 spots in the health run have been set aside for student runners in Putuo. They will be allocated by the district’s education authority to middle schools and high schools to allow students to experience professional road run events.

The remaining 500 spots in the health run will be open to the public.

The registration fee is 100 yuan (US$14.56) per person for the 10K race and 60 yuan per person for the health run.

The top 300 male and 300 female finishers of the 2019 Shanghai International Elite 10K Race will be granted quotas for next year’s Shanghai International Half Marathon.

The prize money for male and female winners has been raised to US$5,000 from last year’s US$3,000. As an encouragement for local runners, the fastest Chinese man and woman finishers will each receive 10,000 yuan (US$1,403).
