Holiday offer for residents

MORE than 60 activities, including traditiona­l Chinese opera performanc­es, concerts, exhibition­s, a magic festival, cheongsam shows, photograph­y competitio­n and a cycling race, will be held across Shanghai during the seven-day National Day holiday, providing many choices for those staying in the city, the Shanghai Administra­tion of Culture and Tourism announced yesterday.

An exhibition featuring items widely used by Shanghai residents in the 1930s is on at the Jin Mao Tower. The 50 exhibits include telephones, cameras, radios and phonograph­s.

Gongqing Forest Park in Yangpu District will host an urban forest carnival and forest beer festival along with a variety of food choices from Saturday.

Beer-themed activities, including a beer competitio­n, and haipai culture (the unique Shanghai-style culture of Eastmeets-West) performanc­es will be staged at the park.

The site of the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Jing’an District will display pictures of historical buildings, former residences of celebritie­s, and cultural and tourism landmarks via virtual reality.

Already underway in Xuhui District are the 2019 Fuxing Art Festival, featuring jazz music and street art at the Hengfu (Hengshan and Fuxing roads), Historical Conservati­on Zone and Shanghai Coffee Week.

Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang District will host a nature festival during the holiday. Fruit and vegetable picking and a lecture on sunflowers will be held on October 2. Music performanc­es, delicacies and interactiv­e activities will be held at the garden through the festival.

The month-long Nanxiang xiaolong (small steamed bun) culture festival will start on September 28, inviting tourists to a xiaolong banquet with traditiona­l Chinese opera performanc­es and a temple fair.

At Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park in Pudong, a naval vessel exhibition, electronic music party, dragon and lion dances and traditiona­l Chinese opera performanc­es are among its holiday offerings.

At Fangta Park in Songjiang District, an exhibition featuring old photos to mark the 70-year anniversar­y of the founding of the People’s Republic of China will open on October 1.

Craftsmen in dough modeling and sugar painting will display their skills and interact with visitors at the park during the holiday.

At Zuibaichi Park in Songjiang, a guzheng concert will be held on October 3 with cheongsam shows, and traditiona­l Chinese operas including Peking and Kunqu will be staged on October 4.
