Shanghai efforts to monitor markets

- Huang Yixuan

SHANGHAI yesterday released its latest COVID-19 prevention and control plans for wholesale and vegetable markets as well as night markets.

The city’s farmers’ markets, wholesale markets, wet markets and supermarkets should carry out thorough cleaning and disinfection of commercial premises as well as related facilities and equipment at least once a week, with particular attention to be paid to worktops, trash cans, sewers, toilets, passageways, passenger and freight elevators, transport vehicles, meat and aquatic products.

Ventilation of the office and trading areas in markets should be well maintained.

All staff from or passing through domestic areas with medium or high risk of coronavirus exposure since May 30 should immediately report to the local health department in their neighborhood or the centers for disease control, and implement measures such as centralized quarantine for observation.

Media reported that Shanghai Seventh People’s Hospital received two people from high-risk area but both tested negative for the virus. They are currently under quarantine and will be tested again.

Customs and other authorities will step up the sampling inspection and quarantine of imported foods, especially meat, aquatic products, fruit and vegetables, and checked relevant import certificates.

The market supervision department will urge food business operators to strictly check certificates of raw food, and take the responsibility to trace food safety information.

Organizers of the city’s night markets have been told to strengthen their management to ensure safety. The entrances, exits and emergency passages of the night markets must be kept open, and disinfection should be carried out at a higher frequency.

Employees must have their temperatures taken and show their green health code before working in the markets. They also need to wear face masks during the entire work time. These requirements also apply to customers visiting the markets. Food vendors are prohibited from selling raw aquatic products, sashimi, salad and other raw food.
