Cash registers buzzing over recent holiday

- Xiao Yang

THE seven-day National Day holiday brought in a total volume of 788 million yuan in commercial sales representing 39 key industries in Minhang.

Many residents chose local trips rather than travel out of town due to the pandemic. “I used savings from not traveling far to buy presents for my wife and child,” said a resident surnamed Song.

The top commercial areas — The Mixc, Bailian Nanfang Shopping Mall and Qibao Vanke — raked in overall sales of 276 million yuan.

Promotions for cosmetics, jewelry and clothes attracted customers. The Mixc for example, had a city camping session and Vanke, which had a 30 percent increase in sales from the same time last year, opened new stores.

Meanwhile Aegean Place, Bailian Nanfang Mall and the Hub did extraordinarily well, with more than 80,000 daily visits. Attractions at these malls included basketball games, food livestreaming shows and a spaceflight exhibition. Sales of gold, automobiles and gourmet food surged. A gold products store in the Mixc reported an increase of more than 50 percent in sales compared to last year’s holiday.

Traditionally the holiday has been a busy season for wedding feasts. Statistics show that the eight main restaurants undertaking such services booked more than 1,300 tables, up 145 percent from last year.

Scenic sites in the district have been busy as well.

Nine A-level tourist spots in Minhang have attracted nine percent of tourists in the city during the holiday — about 810,000 people. Pujiang Country Park received 164,000 visitors.
