China warns against official interaction with Taiwan region

-

A CHINESE Foreign Ministry spokesperson made remarks on the result of the election in the Taiwan region on Saturday.

The spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has commented on the result of the election in China’s Taiwan region, said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson in a statement.

The spokesperson said that the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair. Whatever changes take place in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change; the Chinese government’s position of upholding the one-China principle and opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism, “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” will not change; and the international community’s prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and the long-standing and overwhelming adherence to this principle will not change.

The one-China principle is the solid anchor for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We believe that the international community will continue to adhere to the one-China principle, and understand and support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and striving to achieve national reunification, said the spokesperson.

Taiwan’s leadership and legislature elections were held on Saturday.

Candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party Lai Ching-te and his running mate Hsiao Bi-khim won the election.

The Foreign Ministry urged the United States to stop its official interaction with Taiwan and stop sending any wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence” after the US State Department issued a statement on the election.

It goes against the US’ own political commitment of maintaining only cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the Taiwan region, and sends a gravely wrong signal to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, the spokesperson said.

“We strongly deplore and firmly oppose this, and have made serious representations to the US side.”

The Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations. The one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations, a prevailing consensus among the international community, and the political foundation of China-US relations, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson said China firmly opposes the US having any form of official interaction with Taiwan and interfering in Taiwan affairs in any way or under any pretext.

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in Japan said yesterday it strongly opposed Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa’s statement congratulating Taiwan region’s new leader-elect Lai.

A spokesperson for the embassy said in a statement that the move by the Japanese side seriously interferes in China’s internal affairs, violates the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan. China has made solemn representations with Japan.
