Footage from a coming documentary about Harry and Meghan shows they are once again prepared to tackle the topic of their rift with the British royal family head on.

Netflix’s release of roughly a minute’s footage from Harry & Meghan comes as their relatives – the Prince and Princess of Wales – visit the United States and Buckingham Palace wrestles with a racism row.

The trip to Boston had already been clouded by tensions with Harry and Meghan, who quit their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. The footage includes photos and interview snippets.

“No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors,” the Duke of Sussex says as a photo of Meghan crying while holding a phone is shown. There is the sound of glass breaking and an image of William and Kate appears. “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear the story from us,” Meghan says as the trailer ends.

Netflix is billing the six-part series as “an unprecedented and in-depth” look at “one of the most-discussed couples in history”. It is believed the documentary will air on December 8.

The main purpose of William and Kate’s trip is to attend an awards ceremony for the Earthshot environmental prize that William set up.

On Wednesday, William’s godmother Lady Susan Hussey, 83, stepped down from her role in the royal household after repeatedly asking a black woman, Ngozi Fulani, at a Buckingham Palace function: “What part of Africa are you from?”

Fulani, who was born in Britain and works for a domestic abuse support group, described the incident as an “abuse”. Buckingham Palace and William condemned the incident, with the prince’s spokesperson saying “racism has no place in our society”.

Also, during William and Kate’s visit to a Boston Celtics basketball match, some of the crowd loudly chanted “USA, USA” when their pictures were shown on a screen in the stadium. UK media reports said the couple also faced some boos from the crowd.
