Ethereal Beauty
Mysterious and iridescent, this is a Glowing Jellyfish you will want to get your hands on
Glowing Jellyfish is not a name you would immediately associate with an exquisite, high-end jewellery line. But Gübelin is full of surprises, and in its quest to explore all aspects of marine life the Swiss jeweller has shifted focus from ocean currents and found inspiration in the fluid, graceful movements of this mysterious sea creature.
And the more you think about it, the more it makes sense. Anyone who has been scuba diving will have admired the way jellyfish float and bloom in the water. Made almost entirely of water, their bell-shaped bodies gently billow to and fro and their long tentacles can seem like trails of light in the shallow seas. Having barely changed in the last 500 million years, jellyfish are also reminders of ancient earth—much like sapphires, the key gemstone of this collection. Which means that like sapphires, their beauty is timeless.
The star piece of this imaginative jewellery
line is the platinum ring, which consists of an untreated oval Kashmir sapphire of 3.78 carats. The platinum ring is embellished by a quartet of pear-shaped sapphires totalling 0.3 carats, as well as eight pear-shaped diamonds totalling 3.81 carats and further augmented by 82 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 0.51 carats.
Gübelin has again drawn inspiration from the natural world and the gems it works with. The Glowing Jellyfish piece, for instance, was inspired by a zircon crystal inclusion trapped in a sapphire. Common in sapphires, these inclusions can result in fascinating halo effects, reminiscent of the iridescent glow of a jellyfish—meaning Gübelin can bring the ethereal beauty of these creatures to the wearer’s finger.
So while the idea of touching an actual jellyfish isn’t too appealing, we would do anything to get our hands on a Glowing Jellyfish sapphire ring this festive season.
