TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL
With their striking aesthetics and intriguing backgrounds, these pieces would make bold additions to many a collection
DARK HORSE TUDOR
Tudor’s popular Black Bay offers a chronograph for the very first time. The 41mm Heritage Black Bay Chrono has a bold black dial with large luminescent hands in Tudor’s “snowflake” style. It is a very sporty affair, with a tachymeter and a 45-minute counter, and is water-resistant to 200 metres, the notation for which is a touch of red on the dial. The case is held by either a riveted steel bracelet or a leather strap, but Tudor adds an extra strap in casual denim in both cases. The chronograph movement was developed in collaboration with Breitling.
SPLIT SECOND
TAG HEUER Often billed as Tag Heuer’s best-selling model, the Carrera Heuer-01 chronograph appears in a new guise in 2017. Its case, bezel, lugs and case middle are all entirely ceramic in dramatic matte black with a micro-blasted finish. The result is a very sleek look, as a plus, it’s hypoallergenic. Being scratchresistant, the ceramic will retain its good looks. Steel is used for the functional parts and the case back, but the 45mm chronograph is light and guaranteed to 100 metres.
IN FLIGHT
ZENITH The pilot’s watch still fascinates and no brand does it better than Zenith. The new bronze Zenith Pilot Extra Special Chronograph belongs to the brand’s Heritage Collection, which salutes aviation pioneers and their reliance on Zenith. Louis Blériot wore a Zenith watch when he flew across the English Channel in 1909, and this is celebrated on the case back. The new watch is powered by the famous high-frequency El Primero movement.
DEEP BLUES OMEGA
Omega is justly famous for its attention to detail. Its Planet Ocean Big Blue, which has just been added to the Seamaster collection, covers all bases. The 45.5mm case is bright blue, touched with orange and made of light, scratch-resistant ceramic, while the bezel is Omega’s proprietary Liquidmetal, with the first 15 minutes indicated in orange rubber. The indices and hands are coated in Superluminova on the polished blue dial, and the sapphire crystals on the back and front have an anti-glare coating. There is even an anti-bacterial coating on the inside of the strap. The Big Blue is waterproof to 600 metres and has a 60-hour power reserve.
