Tatler Hong Kong

Traveller’s Tales

When it comes to travel, you can’t beat a personal recommendation. A reliable, real-life review of an under-theradar resort or remote destination shared by someone you know and trust. In this age of fake news and sponsored social media posts it can be hard to know which travel stories are authentic, so word-of-mouth holiday tips are worth their weight in gold.

And invaluable travel advice is exactly what we discovered when we asked five Hong Kong jetsetters to reveal their most memorable journeys in Dream Destinations on page 100. Get the low-down on Marie-christine Leelouey’s encounter with gorillas in Rwanda and gelada baboons in Ethiopia, Loui Lim’s expedition into the Vietnamese jungle to explore the world’s largest cave, Ivan Pun’s rhino tagging exprience in South Africa, plus many more bucket-list-worthy adventures.

Like Marie-christine, I also met a tribe of inquisitive and surprisingly friendly gelada baboons while trekking in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains. My top tip is to stay at Limalimo Lodge, a surprisingly chic little hideaway perched on the edge of an escarpment, with spectacular views over the national park.

Another destination I whole-heartedly recommend is Beirut. I was lucky enough to spend a week in the cool, cultural and oh-so chic Lebanese capital and was touched by the warmth of the people and the deliciousness of the food. Read my insider guide on page 116.

Another Tatler friend with wanderlust is Hong Kong-based photographer Stephen King. See stunning shots of his voyage through Norway’s Svalbard archipelago in our visual essay Frozen North on page 110.

Even this month’s cover star, Jane Louey, is a selfconfessed travel addict. In Family Matters on page 90, she reflects on the most amazing holidays she’s shared with her husband, James, and their children Jeremy, Jacqueline and Jamie, including trips to Italy, New Zealand and South Africa.

As the sorely missed culinary explorer Anthony Bourdain once said, “Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.” So, without meaning to be rude, go get lost.
