It was a night of song and dance—and no party with Peter Cheung would be complete without a rendition of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana and a choreographed lip-synch performance of Madonna’s Vogue. He did both, and of course they were high points of the night. More than 350 of Peter’s friends from around the world gathered at the Grand Hyatt for his 50th birthday celebrations, which coincided with the third anniversary of his strategic consultancy, Peter Cheung Asia.

In keeping with the evening’s dress code of “glamourous chic,” guests were dressed to impress, in particular Sharie Ross-tse, Candice Suen-sieber and Mira Yeh. Peter sparkled in an embellished Saint Laurent blazer before changing into a vintage Versace silk shirt from the Gianni Versace era. Guests sipped on Pernod Ricard champagne and enjoyed caviar served by the hotel’s executive chef, Gerhard Passrugger. Then they moved into the ballroom, where they dined on Hainan chicken rice, the signature dish of the hotel’s Grand Cafe, which Peter had served in the ballroom for the first time.

In typical Peter fashion, the backdrop was adorned with his catchphrase, “Love you ... Mean it!,” and instead of being identified by the traditional numbers, tables were named after 1980s and ’90s hits such as Push It, If, and Never Gonna Give You Up, ensuring guests partied like it was 1988-1998. Peter kicked off proceedings with an opening speech in which he emphasised that the evening was more of a celebration of the friends in his life than about him, and that “tonight is about having fun, listening to great music and dancing your asses off.”

In lieu of birthday gifts, Peter asked that friends donate to the End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation, and he introduced the founder of the organisation, former actress Josephine Siao, who spoke about the invaluable work it does. Over HK$300,000 was raised on the night for the charity.
