Loro Piana’s dedication to fine materials and crafting come to the fore in its fall/winter collection, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of Loro Piana’s feather-light Baby Cashmere
Just like fine wines, quality fabrics are the result of careful growing and harvesting techniques, and a deep understanding of the region where they are created. For the past 10 years, Italian luxury brand Loro Piana has employed all these and more to produce the Baby Cashmere from which it crafts downy, ultra-fine clothing. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this inimitable material, Loro Piana created the Baby Cashmere Jubilee autumn/winter 2018-19 collection.
Baby Cashmere comes from young goats grazing the hostile expanse of Inner Mongolia’s desert, which features dunes as high as 300 metres. Come June, herders are able to harvest about 30 grams of light, soft fibres from the underfleece of the sixmonth-old goats. There will be no more of the precious fibres for the herders to harvest until the following year, when a new batch of baby goats will have grown their fleeces.
It was Pier Luigi Loro Piana, one of the company’s heirs, who came up with the idea of incorporating the fleece of kids (young goats) into clothing, since this cashmere was much softer and finer than that from the adult goats. In the mid-1990s, he asked a herder to set aside the fibres from kids rather than combine it with the cashmere harvested from his older goats. Over the years, the brand worked with the herders to develop a sustainable system to harvest the kids’ coats.
The result is a fine, pure white material that Loro Piana uses to create luxurious garments for autumn and winter, from stylish sweaters and jackets to scarves and other accessories.
