Anyone lucky enough to have had a birthday cake from Sevva or Ms B’s Cakery knows that Bonnae Gokson’s creations look as good as they taste, so it’s no surprise that they are also sought-after for weddings. Over the years, Bonnae has dreamed up wedding cakes that run the gamut from simple and sleek one-tier delights to intricate creations featuring multiple bouquets of sugar flowers.

With her keen sense of style and acute attention to detail, Bonnae has always believed the cake must fit in with the overall theme of the wedding. “You don’t want it to look out of place,” she says. “You are trying to manifest whatever is the most beautiful for their special day.”

The style maven was surprised a couple of years ago to see photos from a celebrity couple’s high-profile wedding featuring a roughly finished cake that jarred in an otherwise romantic setting. This spurred her to produce a coffee table book, Weddings, Butterflies & the Sweetest Dreams, which features beautiful images of weddings from around the world paired with magnificent cakes specifically designed by Bonnae for those settings.

Two years in the making, it follows Bonnae’s first book, Butterflies and All Things Sweet, which has won awards in France, the US and Australia since it was published in 2013.

One doesn’t need to be a bride to appreciate the new book and its selection of beautiful images, which feature table settings, bouquets, gowns and more along with Bonnae’s magnificent wedding cakes. Says the author, “The book is not just for brides-to-be but for anyone who appreciates beauty, artistry and love in all its forms.”

The spread of which Bonnae is perhaps most proud features a cake designed to match a striking wedding gown by Vera Wang. “I designed a cake that has our signature topping of cotton candy and hand-painted macarons,” says Bonnae. “It is unique, as it takes great skill just to style and twist the cotton candy.” Wang, along with fellow fashion icon Iris Apfel, also penned a foreword to the tome. “This book allows me to indulge in my love for fashion and photography as well,” says Bonnae. Asked what makes a wedding special for her, Bonnae breaks it down to one thing: “I’ve been to so many weddings, from ones at palaces to more intimate gatherings. It’s all about the heart. When you see the amount of love and care that the couple took to plan this day that they are sharing with their family and friends, that makes the whole thing special.”

Weddings, Butterflies & the Sweetest Dreams is published this month.
