EXPLORE HELEN MA’S TOP FIVE SHOPPING DESTINATIONS IN ROME:
VIA DEI CONDOTTI
Probably Rome’s most popular and prominent shopping street, Via dei Condotti should be on any serious shopper’s radar, although it can get crowded. The entire length of the street from the bottom of the Spanish Steps is lined with Italy’s most renowned fashion designers and jewellers. Just make sure you pack all your credit cards for a stroll.
VIA BORGOGNONA
For relief from the crowds on Via dei Condotti head to Via Borgognona, which runs parallel to it. This elegant cobblestoned avenue is a favourite of those who prefer exclusive stores with an understated ambiance. Weave in and out of designer boutiques on the ground floors of mansions built from the 15th to 18th centuries, and browse the luxury Italian leather goods, design houses and elite souvenir shops.
RINASCENTE
There are two Rinascente shopping malls in Rome, one on Piazza Fiume and the other on Via del Tritone. While both are impressive, Rinascente Via del Tritone not only has a great array of designer shopping, but it also has a unique hidden treat in the basement—the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which still provides water to almost all the fountains in central Rome, the Trevi included. GALLERIA ALBERTO SORDI Not only is this shopping mall (pictured), set in a historic building on Piazza Colonna, packed with exclusive Italian and international stores, restaurants and cafes, it also offers entertainment and events throughout the year to keep you amused as you shop. The mall, which has a beautiful glass ceiling, also provides spectacular views of the square’s stunning architecture.
VIA DEL GOVERNO VECCHIO
If you’re looking for an eclectic selection of gifts, Via del Governo Vecchio, with its bohemian atmosphere, is the perfect location. You’ll find everything from ball gowns to antiques in the quaint boutiques. Dip in and out of vintage clothing and jewellery stores, stopping for a break at the many idyllic cafes and bars as you go.
