BATHS OF CARACALLA

The Romans left countless bath houses in their wake as they conquered the world. One of the finest examples in Rome is to be found on the ancient Appian Way, the Baths of Caracalla. Work on the complex started in AD 212 and was completed five years later.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

Though no longer in its prime, Circus Maximus it still an impressive architectu­ral feat. Built in the sixth century BC and located between the Aventino Hill and Palatine Hill, this was the largest chariot racing stadium built in ancient Rome.

THE MAXXI

The Maxxi (pictured), or the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, is a perfect example of modern architectu­re and how Rome continues to innovate. Standing proud in the northern Flaminio district, it was designed by the late Zaha Hadid.

CASTEL SANT’ANGELO

On the banks of the Tiber River and close to Vatican City, Castel Sant’angelo was built as the mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family. It was the tallest building in Rome at the time of its constructi­on, which took place from AD 123 to 139.

ARCH OF CONSTANTIN­E

Standing between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, the Arch of Constantin­e is one of the last great monuments of imperial Rome. The largest surviving Roman triumphal arch, it was built in AD 315.
