THE VATICAN

No trip to Rome would be complete without walking in the footsteps of pilgrims gone by. Behold Michelangelo’s masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and absorb the atmosphere of one of the most recognisable institutions in Europe (pictured).

SPANISH STEPS

Descending from the Church of Trinità dei Monti to Piazza di Spagna, or Spanish Square, the baroque-style steps have featured in numerous movies, including Roman Holiday (1953), starring Bulgari jewellery collector Audrey Hepburn, and Eat Pray Love (2010), starring Julia Roberts.

PANTHEON

The Pantheon evolved from an early Roman temple, which historians believe was built around 27 BC as a dedication to the gods, into a traditional church around AD 609. Inside, marvel at the vast dome; its height measures the same as its diameter—43 metres.

TREVI FOUNTAIN

At 26 metres tall and 20 metres wide, this monument has captured the imagination of visitors since the latter part of the 18th century. Legend has it that if you toss a single coin in, you’re guaranteed to return to Rome, two coins and you’ll find romance, and three will bring wedding bells.

COLOSSEUM

You can’t miss this colossal amphitheatre in the heart of Rome, which opened in AD 80 to entertain Romans with games and gladiator fights. Nearby you’ll also find the Roman Forum—the ancient city’s political, social and religious centre— and Palatine Hill, widely thought to be the birthplace of the city.
