Tatler Hong Kong

Creative Desires

- —Jakki Phillips Editor-in-chief

Joyce Wang is filled with a sense of wonder. The award-winning interior designer is fascinated with journeys and places and, through her projects, she loves to transport people—into the past, the future and even alternative realities. Mott 32, the restaurant project that launched her career, invites diners into Hong Kong’s past, while Spiga in LHT Tower transports guests to 1950s Italy, and the E by Equinox St James health club in London’s Mayfair, with its bold, black slate and polished metals, transforms a historic structure into something out of a science fiction film.

Joyce believes it was her nomadic upbringing that sparked her roaming imagination. Born to Shanghainese parents in Honolulu, she was raised in Hong Kong, then attended boarding school in the UK and university in Boston, London and the Dutch city of Delft.

Unsurprisingly, when Louis Vuitton, a brand synonymous with travel, sought a creative collaborator in Hong Kong, they turned to Joyce. This month, the designer will bring to life the luxury maison’s latest showcase of Objets Nomades, a collection of limited edition, portable objects crafted by luminaries in the fields of art, architecture and interiors.

Turn to Time Traveller on page 129 to discover how Joyce’s international lifestyle inspired her curation of this exquisite homeware exhibition, which takes place at the Central Magistracy at Tai Kwun from March 23 to 31.

We continue our exploration of homeware with another Hong Kong interior designer, Alice Keswick. She invites us into her beautiful residence on The Peak and shares the stories behind her kaleidoscopic world of vintage furnishings and contemporary art. See Change of Scene on page 170.

There’s also a riot of colour to be found in Bright Young Things on page 146, a photo essay starring nine young trailblazers shot at the AIA Carnival. Expect clouds of candy floss, buckets of popcorn and some fun millennial musings.

And, to mark International Women’s Day, the Asia Tatler editors highlight women in their regions who have made a mark in the fashion industry over the past year with their business acumen and unique personal style. Our fashion team shines a light on Victoria Tang, Hilary Tsui, Dee Poon and Anaïs Mak— discover why on page 158.

And, finally, I share some travel tales of my own. From ghosts and alms-giving to foraging and a cave retreat—read about my experience at Rosewood Luang Prabang in Magical Laos on page 138.
