Business dispute resolution and the importance of effective advocacy in an increasingly litigious marketplace

Conventional wisdom has it that in every trial there’s a winner and a loser. For anyone experiencing conflict, be it of a business or a personal nature, or indeed both, their first thought might be to hire a lawyer from a high-profile law firm.

If so, they should think again. Gall Solicitors is a small, independent law firm specialising in dispute resolution, but their size hasn’t stopped them from building an impressive track record. Staffed by experts in their fields, with strong local roots, the firm has built an excellent reputation for honesty and integrity in less than a decade since it was founded, both with its clients and with Hong Kong’s judiciary.

“Our aim is to always be a respected firm that provides practical advice and sensible solutions to clients,” says Nick Gall, senior partner and head of litigation at Gall, whose father served as a High Court judge in Hong Kong. “So where we see injustice, we do our best to remedy it. We have a wealth of experience in litigation, mediation and arbitration; we are very good at what we do and we get strong results.“

Indeed, the boutique firm, with six partners and 12 lawyers, is so good at handling highly complex disputes, many of which involve multijurisdictional litigation, that a large part of its commercial work comes from international referrals. Clients include foreign governments, banks and other financial institutions, hedge funds, listed companies, land and property owners and high-net-worth individuals.

In addition to business litigation, Gall boasts an award-winning employment team; indeed, it is one of the few firms in Hong Kong to act for both employers and employees on both contentious and non-contentious matters.

The firm is also expert in financial matters relating to asset protection, thanks to a family law team headed by executive partner Caroline Mcnally. With 20 years in family law practice, she has experience in complex financial issues stemming from the end of relationships that feature substantial assets and cross-jurisdictional elements.

“Clients are looking for relief, somebody to be their trusted advisor and to guide them through the legal process to a solution,” says Mcnally. “Our firm’s goal is to protect the client’s wealth and assets by representing them with a strategy that resolves the issue in the least time and at the least cost.”

On top of that, Gall’s lawyers provide pro bono legal advice to vulnerable social groups, helping local NGOS in the fields of employment and family law.

“It’s not all about making money; we try to give back,” adds Gall. “We have turned down big money clients where there would be a moral compromise. We are confident in our reputation as a boutique firm that provides a high level of expertise in the areas of law that we chose to specialise in.”
