ROGELIO MARTÍNEZ FURÉ caminos labrados por la fe en su tierra

Fue en el barrio Yumurí, de Matanzas, donde nació Rogelio Martínez Furé el 28 de agosto de 1937, hace ya 80 años. Allí la vida diaria estaba marcada por la coexistencia de representantes de diversas partes del planeta. Música, colores, costumbres, alimentos, tradiciones, expresiones verbales, filosofías, conductas de tanta gente nutrieron su sensibilidad. Así se abría el camino que lo conduciría a indagar en las raíces de nuestra identidad.

Los estudios de Derecho en la Universidad de La Habana y su labor en el Instituto de Etnología y Folclor de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba nutrieron su intelecto. El magisterio de Argeliers León en el Seminario de Folclor en el Teatro Nacional sedimentó las inquietudes que lo llevaron a fundar, en 1962, el Conjunto Folklórico Nacional junto al coreógrafo mexicano Rodolfo Reyes, con la colaboración de practicantes de focos religiosos devenidos en informantes, a quienes les correspondió la enorme responsabilidad de develar ante el mundo la extraordinaria riqueza espiritual del pueblo de Cuba. «La identidad es un río de aguas siempre renovadas que, al final, desembocan en el océano de la humanidad», dice Furé, y esa máxima ha regido su labor de investigación y promoción de nuestras tradiciones populares, en las cuales ha subrayado la impronta africana y caribeña en la cultura cubana.

Colaboró con los hermanos Camejo en el Guiñol Nacional, con Teatro Estudio y con el montaje de María Antonia, texto antológico de Eugenio Hernández Espinosa, dirigido por el Maestro Roberto Blanco. Junto al inolvidable Sergio Vitier, Furé creó Oru, grupo donde la música y la poesía se daban la mano. También ha publicado una gran cantidad de libros, entre los cuales resaltan sus compilaciones y traducciones de poesía africana.

Por su infatigable gestión en la preservación del patrimonio de la nación ha recibido la Medalla Alejo Carpentier y la Orden Félix Varela, otorgadas por el Consejo de Estado de la República de Cuba, y sus colegas lo han distinguido con el Premio Nacional de Investigación, el Premio Nacional de Danza y el Premio Nacional de Literatura. Es Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de las Artes de La Habana.

His daily life was marked there by the coexistence of representatives from several parts of the world. Music, colors, habits traditions, verbal expressions, philosophies, so many people´s behavior nourished his sensitivity. Thus was opened the road that would lead him to inquire into the roots of our identity.

His studies at the Law School at Havana University and his work at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore under the Cuban Academy of Sciences nurtured his intellect. Argeliers Leon´s teachings at the Seminario de Folclor at the Teatro Nacional settled the interests that led him to found the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional, in 1962, along with Mexican choreographer Rodolfo Reyes, and the collaboration of religious devotees who became informants, and both had the huge responsibility of revealing to the world the extraordinary spiritual wealth of the Cuban people. «Identity is like a river with ever renovated waters which at the end of their journey flow into the ocean of humanity», says Fure, and that maxim has ruled his work of research and promotion of our popular traditions whose African and Caribbean stamp in Cuban culture he has stressed.

He collaborated with brothers Camejo at the Guiñol Nacional, with Teatro Estudio and with the staging of Maria Antonia, and the anthological script of Eugenio Hernandez Espinosa, directed by Professor Roberto Blanco. Along with unforgettable Sergio Vitier, Fure created Oru, a group where music and poetry would shake hands. He has also published a great deal of books, among which stand out his collections and translations of African poetry.

On account of his unflagging efforts for the preservation of the nation´s heritage, he has been awarded with Medalla Alejo Carpentier and Orden Felix Varela, bestowed by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, and his colleagues have honored him with the Premio Nacional de Investigación, the Premio Nacional de Danza and the Premio Nacional de Literatura.
