Ceremonies arranged for former TC leaders

SEPARATE ceremonies will be held to mark the anniversar­ies of the deaths of two Turkish Cypriot leaders, the first taking place today in memory of TRNC Founding President Rauf Denktaş, who died on January 13 six years ago.

A ceremony commemorat­ing his predecesso­r as Turkish Cypriot communal leader, Fazıl Küçük, is scheduled for Monday.

Today’s memorial for President Denktaş begins at 10.08am at the TMT monument in Lefkoşa, where President Mustafa Akıncı is to deliver an address.

An additional event in honour of the former President is to take place at Lefkoşa’s Atatürk Cultural Centre from 10.45am, where a speech will be delivered by his son, Serdar Denktaş.

On Monday, a ceremony to mark the 34th anniversar­y of the death of Dr Fazıl Küçük will begin at 10.26am at his mausoleum near Lefkoşa, where President Akıncı is to lay a wreath alongside Dr Küçük’s son, Mehmet.

A further ceremony for Dr Küçük is scheduled for 11.15am on Monday at Lefkoşa’s Atatürk Cultural Centre, with speeches and a performanc­e by the Atatürk Vocational College choir.

AN EIGHT million TL monument, grave and museum project for Rauf Denktaş is close to completion. Gerçek Constructi­on owner Halil Gerçek told CyprusToda­y his company had now entered “the planting of trees and flowers stage” and it was hoped to finish by April.
